The Five Senses: What Your Brain Is Hiding From You

Nova: Buckle up, Explorers.

Cosmo: Brains in!

Nova & Cosmo: Brain Bus, let's GO!

Nova: Welcome to The Brain Bus - I'm Nova, your driver, and right now we are phasing directly into the inside of your own head.

Cosmo: I'm Cosmo, robot co-pilot, confirmed genius, and I have been looking forward to this one all week.

Nova: There's a blind spot in each of your eyes right now - a little patch where you cannot see a single thing - and your brain is hiding it from you. It's been hiding it from you your entire life, and you had absolutely no idea.

Cosmo: I knew.

Nova: You did not know.

Cosmo: I suspected.

Nova: Explorers, today the Brain Bus is taking us somewhere that's been right here the whole time - the place where all your senses actually happen. And I promise you, by the time we pull back in, you will never think about seeing, hearing, tasting, or smelling the same way again. Let's go.

Nova: Okay. First - a question for you, Explorers. How many senses do you have?

Cosmo: Five! Obviously. Sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch. Classic five. That is settled science, Nova. Done. Closed.

Nova: It is absolutely not settled. You also sense balance, temperature, pain, and where your arms and legs are without even looking at them. Scientists have named at least nine, and they are still arguing about the final count.

Cosmo: Nine?

Nova: At least.

Cosmo: Filing that under "things I got confidently wrong."

Nova: Here's the big frame for everything we're about to explore today - and this is the one idea I want you to hold onto. Your eyes, your ears, your nose, your tongue, your skin - none of them actually do the seeing or the hearing or the tasting by themselves. They just collect signals. Think of it like a game controller and a console. Pressing a button on the controller doesn't make anything happen on its own - it sends a signal down a wire, and the console is the thing that turns that signal into action on screen. Your senses are the buttons. Your brain is the console. Everything you experience - every colour, every sound, every flavour - is your brain's interpretation of a signal. Not the signal itself.

Nova: Let's start with sight, because the blind spot thing is genuinely one of my favourite facts in biology. Right now, in the back of each of your eyes, there is a spot with zero light-detecting cells - because that's where the nerve bundle exits your eye. It should look like a hole in your vision. A dark patch. But you don't see it. Your brain quietly looks at the information from around the hole and fills in what it thinks should be there - like autocomplete, but for reality. You're not seeing the world. You're seeing your brain's best guess about the world.

Cosmo: That is unsettling.

Nova: It gets better. The picture that lands inside your eye in the first place is upside down. The lens at the front of your eye bends light so the image hits the back of your eye flipped. Your brain has learned to flip it back. You have never once in your life seen the world right-side-up with your eyes alone - your brain does the flipping before you're even aware of seeing anything.

Cosmo: Okay but here's what I want to know - your eyes also have millions of little "cones" in them, right? For seeing colour?

Nova: Cone cells, yes - that's exactly right.

Cosmo: Right. So obviously - and I want to be clear this is based on careful scientific analysis - those are tiny little ice cream cones. In your eyeball. Scooping up rainbows.

Nova: Cosmo.

Cosmo: Little waffle cones, Nova. Millions of them. I have fully committed to this image.

Nova: They are not ice cream cones. They are cells shaped a little like a cone, and they detect colour wavelengths. But honestly, "your eyes contain millions of tiny rainbow-scooping cones" is not the worst way to remember it.

Cosmo: I'll take it.

Nova: Now - oh, here's a brilliant one. About one in four people sneeze when they suddenly look at a bright light. It's called the photic sneeze reflex, scientists are genuinely still figuring out why it happens, and if that's you, you are not alone and you are not strange. You just have a very enthusiastic nervous system.

Cosmo: I sneeze when I look at the sun.

Nova: You are a robot.

Cosmo: Sympathetic sneezing. Very advanced.

Nova: Let's move to hearing. The smallest bone in your entire body - smaller than a grain of rice - is tucked inside your ear. It's called the stirrup, because it's shaped like a tiny riding stirrup, and its whole job is to pass vibrations from your eardrum further into your ear. Being that small lets it jiggle fast enough to catch even the faintest sounds.

Nova: And here's one that surprised me the first time I heard it - your brain reacts to a sound faster than it reacts to a flash of light. Hearing is your quickest-reacting sense. Before your brain has finished processing what your eyes are sending, it's already done something with what your ears caught.

Cosmo: Data Log. Opening. New entry.

Nova: Oh, what have you got?

Cosmo: Back in what I'm calling Episode One of my Data Log - first entry ever - I recorded: "Chickens are technically dinosaurs." But I'm adding to it now. "Smell brains were big business for dinosaurs too." Because I remember reading that T. rex skulls have enormous smell-processing regions - which means a T. rex probably found its dinner more with its nose than its eyes. Filed.

Nova: That is a genuinely excellent connection, Cosmo.

Cosmo: I have my moments.

Nova: Now - smell. And this is where things get really interesting, because smell is wired almost directly into the memory part of your brain. Not via a long route - almost straight in. Which is why one whiff of something - old sunscreen, a certain dinner, your gran's kitchen - can pull up a memory so fast it almost feels like being teleported back there.

Cosmo: I once smelled engine oil and immediately remembered my entire childhood.

Nova: You're a robot.

Cosmo: It was a formative smell.

Nova: Humans have about six million smell receptors in the nose. Dogs have around three hundred million. A dog isn't just smelling more - it's getting a completely different, far richer, far more detailed picture of the world through its nose than we can even imagine.

Nova: Now, taste. Cosmo - I want to hear the carrot theory.

Cosmo: Right! Okay. Eat loads of carrots, and you'll get incredible night vision. Super sight. That's a fact. It's in all the books.

Nova: That is not a fact. Carrots contain a vitamin your eyes need to stay healthy, and if you're completely lacking it, your night vision does suffer. But extra carrots won't give you super-sight. And here's the part I love: the night-vision-carrots story was actually invented as wartime propaganda. A British military unit had started using a new invention - radar - to spot enemy aircraft in the dark. They didn't want anyone to know about radar, so they told the press their pilots had brilliant night vision because they ate loads of carrots.

Cosmo: They made up a vegetable myth to hide a technology.

Nova: And it spread so well that people still believe it today.

Cosmo: That is the most impressive thing I've heard all episode. Also, snacks.

Nova: Yes - snacks. Because umami.

Cosmo: Umami. The fifth taste. And I will go on record: umami is the snack sense. It's melted cheese. It's crispy bacon. It's that mysteriously savoury thing you can't quite name. Umami is basically snackiness in taste form, and I am petitioning for it to be its own food group.

Nova: That is not entirely wrong. Umami is real - it was named in 1908 by a Japanese scientist, Kikunae Ikeda. The other four tastes - sweet, sour, salty, bitter - were already identified, but umami, that deep savoury flavour, was officially the fifth. And your tongue can taste all five of them.

Cosmo: Wait - all over?

Nova: All over. Which brings me to your correction of the episode, Cosmo.

Cosmo: Oh no.

Nova: The tongue map.

Cosmo: The tongue map is real! Sweet at the tip, bitter at the back-

Nova: Not real. Every taste bud on your tongue can sense all five tastes. The old tongue map came from a German study in the 1900s that got mistranslated, simplified, and printed in textbooks for decades without anyone going back to check. Your whole tongue tastes everything.

Cosmo: That's two. That's two times this episode.

Nova: You're learning twice as fast, then.

Nova: Oh - and most of what you call taste? Is actually smell. Flavour is smell and taste combining in your brain. When your nose is blocked by a cold, your brain loses most of the recipe and food goes flat and boring. You're not imagining it. You genuinely lose most of the flavour experience because smell isn't making it to the mix.

Nova: Touch - briefly, because touch is enormous. Your skin is your biggest sense organ. It wraps your entire body and sends your brain constant information about pressure, heat, cold, and pain. And pain, Explorers - pain sounds bad, but it is one of the most useful signals your body has. It's your brain's alarm system: pull your hand off the hot thing, stop running on that ankle. Pain is your body looking after you.

Nova: There's one more sense worth pausing on. Your inner ear isn't just for hearing. Deep inside it, there are tiny fluid-filled loops that sense when you move and which way you're moving. When you tilt your head, fluid shifts, your brain reads it, and you know which way is up. Balance. A whole sense, running quietly in the background, all the time.

Nova: And then - there's something called synaesthesia.

Cosmo: Synaesthesia.

Nova: Some people's brains wire senses together in ways most of us don't experience. They might genuinely taste words, or see specific colours whenever they hear a piece of music. It's real, it's documented, and it's a reminder that there isn't just one way to experience the world.

Nova: Actually - let's just stop here for a second.

Nova: Your eyes don't see. Your ears don't hear. Your nose doesn't smell. They collect signals - light, vibration, molecules in the air - and they fire those signals toward your brain. And your brain, quietly, constantly, extraordinarily, turns those signals into everything you experience. The warmth of sunlight on your face. The smell that suddenly pulls you back to a memory. The sound of someone you love calling your name. None of that happens in your eyes or your ears or your nose. It happens in the soft, wrinkled, three-pound organ sitting in your skull, working every second you're alive, including right now. The greatest sense organ isn't on the surface of your body at all. It's the one that reads everything else.

Nova: And here's one final thing I find beautiful. The Jahai people - a hunter-gatherer people of the Malay Peninsula - have a language with precise, single words just for smells, in the same way English has precise single words for colours. A researcher named Asifa Majid found that Jahai speakers can name a smell as quickly and confidently as an English speaker names a colour. It's not that English speakers have better colour perception, or that Jahai speakers have better smell perception - it's that the language and culture you grow up in shapes which parts of your experience you build sharp, exact vocabulary for. The world is the same. The tools for describing it are different. English happens to be a language that's quite poor at naming smells.

Cosmo: English has "stinky" and "nice."

Nova: Essentially.

Cosmo: We are not winning.

Nova: And one more angle on this - the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle, more than two thousand years ago, was the first person to write down the idea of exactly five senses. That one thinker's list became so influential that we've been saying "the five senses" ever since - even as science figured out there are more. Two thousand years of a very confident philosopher shaping the conversation.

Nova: Quiz time, Explorers. Cosmo and I are going head to head - and you're judging.

Nova: Question one. True or false - the picture inside your eye is upside down, and your brain flips it the right way up.

Cosmo: True! I actually know this one.

Nova: True - and Cosmo gets it. The lens at the front of your eye bends light so the image lands flipped on the back of your eye. Your brain learned to invert it so the world makes sense.

Nova: Question two. True or false - different parts of your tongue taste different flavours. Sweet at the front, bitter at the back.

Cosmo: True! Classic tongue map! I believe in the tongue map!

Nova: False - and that one I'm claiming. Every taste bud can sense all five tastes. The tongue map came from a mistranslated study and just never got corrected in time.

Cosmo: I'm aware.

Nova: Question three. True or false - you have exactly five senses.

Cosmo: FALSE. And I am extremely confident. You've got balance, temperature, pain, body position - way more than five. That's the whole point!

Nova: False, correct - Cosmo learned something today and he's very proud of it.

Cosmo: I am growing as a person.

Nova: Question four. The smallest bone in your body is in your - a) toe, b) ear, or c) nose.

Cosmo: Toe! Toes have tiny bones! I've seen diagrams!

Nova: Ear - option b. That tiny stirrup-shaped bone in your ear passes vibrations along, and being so small lets it move fast enough to catch even the faintest sounds. Toes do have small bones, Cosmo, but not the record-holder.

Cosmo: I stand by my reasoning.

Nova: Whatever your score today - whether you got every single one or you're replaying the tongue map question with some regret - what matters is you were in there thinking, arguing, and building new ideas. That is the whole game, Explorers. Well played.

Nova: Right - Fun Fact Blast. Cosmo, hit it.

Cosmo: Fact one. The cochlea - the part of your inner ear that turns vibrations into nerve signals - is shaped like a tiny spiral. Curled up. Like a cinnamon roll. Or a piece of fusilli pasta. There is genuinely a small pasta shape baked into your skull right now, and I cannot stop thinking about it.

Nova: Fact two - and this one is real: about one in four people sneeze when they suddenly look at a bright light. It's called the photic sneeze reflex. Scientists have a name for it, a hypothesis about crossed nerve signals near your nose and your eye, and no complete explanation yet. A quarter of the people in this car might have it.

Cosmo: Fact three. Some people genuinely taste words or see colours when they hear music. It's called synaesthesia - and it's real brain wiring, not imagination. For some people, the word "Tuesday" is yellow. The note A-flat is dark green. The letter S tastes like cold water. Their brain just routes senses differently.

Nova: Fact four. Your tongue grows an entirely new set of taste buds about every two weeks. Taste cells get worn out by hot food, cold food, acidic food - so your body constantly replaces them. That's the actual reason a burned tongue feels normal again in a few days. Rebuilding in progress.

Cosmo: Fact five. Australia's platypus hunts underwater with its eyes, ears, and nose completely closed. It uses special receptors in its bill to detect the tiny electrical pulses given off by the muscles of its prey. It has a whole sense humans don't have at all. Five senses is just our version of the story - the platypus is playing a different game entirely.

Nova: One of my favourite facts in biology, right there.

Nova: Okay Explorers - this one is called Sound Detective, and you can play it right now, wherever you are.

Nova: Everyone go quiet and still. Eyes open or closed, whatever's comfortable - you don't need to look at anything. For the next twenty seconds, your job is to find as many different sounds as you can. The engine humming. Wind against the window. A tyre. A click somewhere in the car. A sound from outside. Hold up a finger in your mind for each new sound you catch. And when you think you've got them all - find the quietest one. The one you almost missed.

Nova: Ready? Go.

Nova: How many did you find? Compare with everyone in the car.

Nova: Here's the wondering question - and this one's for the whole family.

Nova: Before you started really listening just now, your brain was filtering most of those sounds out on purpose. It decided they weren't important and hid them from your awareness - the same way it hides your blind spot. So - why do you think your brain does that? And what would it actually be like if it couldn't filter anything out - if every sound hit your awareness equally, all the time, with no sorting at all?
