Nova: Wheels up!

Nova & Cosmo: Brain Bus, let's GO!

Nova: You're on The Brain Bus — I'm Nova, your driver, and today Cosmo and I are taking you somewhere extraordinary.

Cosmo: Hi! I'm Cosmo! I'm a robot! I know approximately one million facts!

Nova: He knows a lot of facts.

Cosmo: Some of them are even correct!

Nova: Okay, Explorers — before we go anywhere, I need you to think about something. A shark. Swimming through the ocean. There's a fish. Buried under the sand. The shark can't SEE the fish. Can't SMELL it. Can't TOUCH it.

Cosmo: Sounds impossible. Case closed. The shark goes hungry.

Nova: Nope! The shark finds it ANYWAY. Because a shark can find a fish hiding under the sand just by feeling the tiny zap the fish's body makes!

Cosmo: Wait. ZAP?!

Nova: ZAP! Every single living body — fish, bird, YOU — makes a tiny little electric signal every time it moves. And a shark can FEEL it.

Cosmo: That is... extremely cool and also a little bit alarming.

Nova: Today on The Brain Bus, we are exploring ANIMAL SUPERPOWERS — specifically two of the most mind-bending ones: echolocation and electroreception. That means finding things with SOUND and finding things with ELECTRICITY.

Cosmo: Those are real words?

Nova: Those are REAL words. And by the end of this ride, you'll know exactly what they mean. Let's go!

Nova: Alright, Explorers — first stop: BATS. And I want everyone to do something. Ready? Take a big breath in...

Nova: And shout HELLO as loud as you can — or if you're in the car right now, even just a little one. Go for it!

Cosmo: HELLO!

Nova: Did you hear that tiny bounce back off the walls around you? Even if it was really small? That is an ECHO. And that echo is a bat's whole entire superpower.

Cosmo: Okay, but here's what I know about bats. My Space Guidebook says — and I'm very sure about this — bats are completely blind. That is why they need sound. They have zero eye function. None. Zip. Empty eye holes.

Nova: Oh, Cosmo.

Cosmo: I stand by it.

Nova: Bats are NOT blind! Most bats can see just fine — some can even see better than us!

Cosmo: ...Empty eye holes?

Nova: No empty eye holes! Here's the really cool part — bats use sound ON TOP of their eyes. So even in the pitch-black dark, when eyes alone just wouldn't work, they can STILL hunt. They shout out really fast little sounds — way too high for our ears to hear — and then they listen for the echo to bounce back.

Cosmo: Oh! Like shouting HELLO in a tunnel!

Nova: Exactly like that! The echo comes back fast if something is close, and slower if something is far away. So the bat's brain does this lightning-fast sum — and it knows exactly where the bug is, how far away it is, and which direction it's flying.

Cosmo: And then it eats the bug.

Nova: And then it eats the bug. Explorers, shout it out — what do we call it when sound bounces back to you?

Cosmo: Three... two... one...

Nova: AN ECHO! And using echoes to find things is called ECHOLOCATION. Eco. Lo. CAY. Shun. Can you say it with us?

Cosmo: Echolocation!

Nova: One more time, big and loud!

Cosmo: E-CHO-LO-CAY-SHUN!

Nova: Perfect. Now here is the part that gave me actual goosebumps when I first found out. When a bat is far away from a bug, it shouts slowly — about ten sounds a second. But as it gets closer and closer, it SPEEDS UP. By the time it's right on top of that bug, it's making about two hundred sounds every single second. Two hundred! That's faster than you can blink.

Cosmo: That is a very chatty bat.

Nova: The fastest chatty bat in the world. And Explorers, here's something that might really surprise you — it's not just bats. Dolphins do echolocation too! A dolphin can see a fish right through muddy, murky water just by clicking and listening to the echo come back.

Cosmo: How does a dolphin shout? Does it go like — WHEEE WHEEE?

Nova: Sort of! Dolphins make their clicks inside their head, and they aim the sound using a special soft blob of fat in their forehead.

Cosmo: ...A blob of fat in their FOREHEAD?

Nova: Scientists call it a melon.

Cosmo: A MELON?! There is a MELON in the dolphin's FOREHEAD?!

Nova: A melon! It focuses the sound like a — well, like a sound-spotlight.

Cosmo: Okay but Nova. NOVA. I need everyone to understand this. The dolphin has a MELON in its head. That means — and I'm doing the math here — every dolphin is basically carrying around a fruit salad in its brain. Which means dolphins could snack at any time. They're just choosing not to. Very mysterious.

Nova: It's not an actual piece of fruit, Cosmo.

Cosmo: It's called a melon, Nova.

Nova: It's a blob of fatty tissue that aims sound beams!

Cosmo: A sound-aiming fruit. I'm putting it in the Data Log. Starting a new Data Log. First entry: dolphins have melons in their heads. Filed.

Nova: And the melon is amazing, because that focused beam of sound bounces off the fish and comes right back — giving the dolphin a perfect picture of where its dinner is, even in water where it can't see a thing.

Nova: Now. Are you ready for the other superpower? The ELECTRIC one?

Cosmo: Yes. Absolutely. I was born ready. Well, I was built ready. I was assembled ready.

Nova: Explorers — let's talk about the PLATYPUS.

Cosmo: The platypus is an Australian animal, and it looks like someone stuck a duck's bill on a beaver's body and said "perfect, ship it."

Nova: It really does look like that. And Australia is actually famous for platypuses — and their cousins, the echidna — because they are some of the only furry animals in the entire world with this particular superpower. The platypus dives underwater... and it closes its eyes. And its ears. And its nose. All shut.

Cosmo: So it's just... floating there? Doing nothing?

Nova: It is absolutely HUNTING. Its rubbery bill is packed with thousands of tiny sensors. And those sensors can feel the tiny little electric signal that comes from a shrimp's wiggling muscles. The shrimp twitches one muscle — and the platypus feels it.

Cosmo: The shrimp makes electricity?!

Nova: Every muscle that moves makes a tiny electric signal. Every single one. In every animal. Including you.

Cosmo: ...I'm making electricity right now?

Nova: Your whole body is buzzing with tiny electric signals!

Cosmo: That is the best thing anyone has ever told me.

Nova: This ability — feeling the electricity that living bodies make — is called ELECTRORECEPTION. Electro. Re. SEP. Shun.

Cosmo: Electroreception!

Nova: And sharks have it too. Remember our hook? A shark's snout is covered in tiny little dots filled with jelly —

Cosmo: JELLY? Like jelly donuts? The shark's nose is sprinkled with JELLY DONUTS?!

Nova: They are tiny jelly-filled holes, and the jelly carries the electric signal right to the shark's nerves. So even a fish that is completely still, buried under the sand, not bleeding, not moving — the shark can feel that tiny electric buzz and zoom right to it.

Cosmo: So the shark is basically finding buried jelly donuts with its own jelly donut nose. I respect the commitment.

Nova: I... am going to let that one go. And here's one more electric animal for you — the electric EEL. Now, most animals just FEEL electricity. The electric eel actually MAKES it. A big one can produce a zap of about six hundred volts.

Cosmo: How big is six hundred volts?

Nova: Big enough to knock over a grown-up.

Cosmo: Can confirm that sounds like a lot.

Nova: But Explorers — before anyone gets worried — the electric eel is not chasing people. It uses its electricity to find food and to protect itself. That's it. It's a tool for finding dinner, not for bothering anyone. And here's the really amazing part: its body works like hundreds of tiny living batteries all stacked in a row — each one adding a little bit more power to the zap.

Cosmo: Like batteries in a flashlight! But the flashlight is a sausage and it can stun a horse.

Nova: That is... a way of putting it.

Cosmo: A battery sausage. That is my official scientific name for the electric eel. You are welcome, science.

Nova: Okay. Explorers, I want everyone to get quiet for just a second.

Nova: Actually quiet. Even in the car.

Nova: Think about this. Right now — wherever you are — every single living thing around you is buzzing. Quietly. Invisibly. Every muscle making its tiny electric signal. Birds. Trees. You. Your family. All of it humming along, just below what our senses can feel. But a platypus can feel it. A shark can feel it. And a bat flying in total darkness is building a whole picture of the world — just from sounds bouncing back. Some animals find their food and their way without using their eyes at all — by listening for sounds that bounce back, or by feeling the tiny electricity that moving bodies make. The world is so much bigger than what we can see.

Cosmo: That was beautiful, Nova. I feel things, and I'm a robot.

Nova: And there's one more thing before we move on. Some PEOPLE do echolocation too. People who can't see have learned to make small clicking sounds with their tongue — and to listen for the echo coming back from walls, trees, and furniture — to build a picture of the room. Their ears do the same incredible echo-math that a bat's brain does. Humans. Just. Like. You.

Cosmo: We are secretly a little bit bat.

Nova: We are secretly a little bit bat.

Nova: Oh — and one more thing! In Han Chinese tradition — that's the culture of hundreds of millions of people, especially in China — the bat is actually a symbol of GOOD LUCK. The Chinese word for bat, biānfú, sounds almost exactly like the word for blessing. So you might see five bats together in paintings and art — called wǔfú — wishing for five good things in life, like long life and happiness. While some people find bats spooky, in Han Chinese tradition a bat flying past is a little flutter of good fortune.

Cosmo: Every bat I see from now on I'm saying thank you.

Nova: That seems right.

Nova: Question two! True or False — a platypus closes its eyes, ears, AND nose underwater and still catches its food.

Nova: TRUE! Its bill is packed with sensors that feel the tiny electric signals from its prey. No eyes needed.

Cosmo: Zero eye function required. Which is different from having empty eye holes.

Nova: Very different. Question three — how does a dolphin find a fish in muddy water? Is it (a) by smelling it, (b) by clicking and listening for the echo, or (c) by tasting the water?

Nova: It's (b) — clicking and listening for the echo! The echo comes back faster from close things and slower from far things, so the dolphin hears exactly where the fish is.

Cosmo: Using its melon. Its forehead melon. I still think about this a lot.

Nova: Question four — what do sharks feel to find a hidden fish? Is it (a) heat, (b) tiny electricity, or (c) wind?

Nova: It's (b) — tiny electricity! Every time a muscle moves, it makes a faint electric signal. Even a still, buried fish can't completely hide.

Cosmo: Jelly donut nose. Finding buried treasure.

Nova: And question five — the BIG one! About how many sounds does a hunting bat make every second when it's zooming right in on a bug — about 2, about 20, or about 200?

Nova: About TWO HUNDRED! It speeds up its clicks as it gets closer so the echoes update faster and it can lock right on. Two hundred per second!

Cosmo: That bat is absolutely not taking a breath.

Nova: Explorers — you just thought incredibly hard and your brain worked that whole quiz like a SUPERCOMPUTER. It doesn't matter how many you got right — what matters is you wondered along with us. And that is exactly what the Brain Bus runs on.

Nova: Okay — FUN FACT BLAST! Five facts, fast as a bat! Ready?

Cosmo: READY!

Nova: Fact one — a sperm whale's click is one of the LOUDEST sounds any animal on Earth can make. It uses that mega-click to hunt in the deep, deep ocean.

Cosmo: Loud enough to rattle your teeth. Fact two — bumblebees can feel a tiny electric buzz around a flower to tell if another bee already drank up the nectar. The flower's electric charge actually changes after a bee visits it!

Nova: I love that one so much. Fact three — some moths — a bat's prey — can HEAR a bat coming and make their own clicks to jam the bat's signal, like scrambling a radio. A moth fighting back with sound!

Cosmo: Moths are secretly sneaky little supervillains. Fact four — the echidna — another Australian animal, the spiky one that looks like a hedgehog had a very big day — also has electroreception, like the platypus! So Australia has TWO furry animals with electric superpowers.

Nova: Australia is doing something right. And fact five —

Cosmo: The most important fact —

Nova: YOUR ears right now, in this car, are doing a tiny bit of echolocation. Sounds bounce off the windows and the seats and come back to your ears a fraction of a second later. You're not as good at it as a bat — but the same basic magic is happening, all the time, without you even knowing.

Nova: Alright, Explorers — Road Challenge time! This one is called Sound Detectives. Here's what I need you to do.

Cosmo: Drivers — eyes open, obviously. Everyone else —

Nova: Close your eyes. All the way. And go completely silent. We're going to listen for ten seconds. Really, really listen.

Nova: What could you hear? Take turns — one at a time — name a sound you heard. And here's the bat part — try to say whether that sound came from in front of you, behind you, or beside you. Without peeking.

Cosmo: Your ears just drew a little map of the world with nothing but sound. That is echolocation magic, right there in your car.

Nova: And here's your wondering question for the whole family — if you could have ONE animal superpower: hearing the world with echoes like a bat, or feeling electricity from living things like a shark or a platypus — which would you pick? And what's the very first thing you'd go find?
