Nova: Buckle up, Explorers.

Nova & Cosmo: Brain Bus, let's GO!
Nova: You're on The Brain Bus — I'm Nova, your driver, and today Cosmo and I are taking you somewhere extraordinary. Cosmo, where are we headed?
Cosmo: Oh oh oh, I know this one! We are going back — waaaaaay back — sixty-six million years, give or take a Tuesday —
Nova: Give or take a Tuesday. Love it. Explorers, I'm talking about the most famous dinosaur that ever thundered across the Earth. Cosmo, do the honours!
Cosmo: I am COSMO, robot co-pilot and self-proclaimed galaxy-brain genius, and today we are visiting — the one, the only — T. REX!
Nova: Now, before we go any further — I have to hit you with a fact that might just break your brain. Ready? The closest living relative of the mighty T. rex might be flapping around a farmyard right now.
Cosmo: A farmyard? Like — with mud?
Nova: Like — with mud. Explorers, say it with me: it's a CHICKEN.
Cosmo: A CHICKEN?!
Nova: A chicken! That buk-buk-buk bird that your nuggets come from? Technically, a tiny, feathery dinosaur cousin. We're going to find out why — and we're going to find out what made T. rex the most powerful hunter that ever lived. Hang on tight, Explorers, because the Brain Bus is pulling all the way into the Cretaceous.
Nova: Alright Explorers, picture this: you're standing in a forest. The ground is shaking. And coming through the trees is an animal as long as a bus — yes, a real bus, like the one you might ride to school — and heavier than a big elephant. That is T. rex. In the flesh.
Cosmo: I have a question. A very important scientific question.
Nova: Go for it, Cosmo.
Cosmo: How big were its TEETH?
Nova: Oh, that is a GREAT question. Cosmo, each tooth could be as long as a banana.
Cosmo: A BANANA. Nova. Nova. Think about this. T. rex had a MOUTH full of bananas.
Nova: They weren't actually bananas, Cosmo —
Cosmo: I know, I KNOW, but imagine — sixty whole teeth, banana-sized, just lined up in there. It's basically a fruit bowl with a head. The King of the Dinosaurs was carrying fresh snacks at all times.

Nova: Okay but here's the part that makes the banana-teeth even more amazing, Explorers. Whenever a T. rex tooth broke — and they broke a LOT, because T. rex was crunching through BONE —
Cosmo: Through actual bone?!
Nova: Through actual bone. Crunch. Like a biscuit. And whenever a tooth broke off, a brand-new one grew right back in underneath it. Again and again and again. T. rex never ran out of teeth.
Cosmo: That is genuinely unfair. I lose one bolt and it's a whole thing.
Nova: Explorers, shout it out — how big was one T. rex tooth? Shout it at the car window! That's right — a BANANA!
Nova: Now. Cosmo. I know you've been dying to share something from your Space Guidebook.
Cosmo: I have! Right here, page forty-seven. It says — and I quote — "T. rex was the fastest dinosaur that ever lived, able to outrun a speeding car. Vroom!"
Nova: Hmmmm. Cosmo —
Cosmo: It's right there in the book, Nova! T. rex! Speeding car! Vroom!
Nova: I love the enthusiasm. But here's the thing — T. rex was so enormous, so incredibly heavy, that if it tried to run that fast it could have actually hurt its own legs. Snapped the bones.
Cosmo: Oh. Oh no. The King of the Dinosaurs had to... be careful?
Nova: Scientists think it was a powerful fast-walker. Like someone who is very large and very confident and does not need to run because everyone already knows they're in charge.
Cosmo: That is somehow even more intimidating.
Nova: And here's the cool bit — T. rex didn't need to be the fastest. It had a different superpower: its nose. T. rex had one of the most incredible senses of smell of any land animal ever. It could sniff out a meal from really, really far away. It didn't chase. It crept. It sniffed. It found you.
Cosmo: That's scarier than running.
Nova: Way scarier. And T. rex's eyes pointed forward — just like yours do, Explorers — which meant it could judge exactly how far away things were. Perfect for zeroing in on dinner.
Nova: Okay, Cosmo — you had a theory about T. rex's arms?
Cosmo: I did. My second scientific theory of the day. I believe — based on careful research and also just looking at pictures — that T. rex was the biggest dinosaur that EVER lived. King of the Dinosaurs means biggest. Obviously.
Nova: I love the logic, but —
Cosmo: No?
Nova: T. rex was enormous — absolutely — as long as a bus, heavier than an elephant. But some meat-eating dinosaurs were actually longer than T. rex. And the giant plant-eaters? Way, way bigger.
Cosmo: So... it's King, but not like... BIGGEST King.
Nova: It's King because of its power. Its jaws. Its strength. We don't call it king for its size — we call it king because when T. rex showed up, everyone paid attention.
Cosmo: Okay. That is actually better than being the biggest.
Nova: Right? Now — Explorers, here is something that might make you go "EWWW" and also "WHOA" at the same time. Scientists found T. rex poop. Turned to stone. With crushed-up bones still inside it.
Cosmo: The world's oldest granola bar.
Nova: Cosmo —
Cosmo: Extra crunchy. With real bone bits. Ancient trail mix. Filed under snacks.
Nova: That "stone poop" is called a coprolite, and it is actual scientific proof that T. rex's bite was strong enough to crush right through bone and swallow it. That is one of the strongest bites of any land animal ever.
Cosmo: Okay but also - the world's oldest granola bar.

Nova: Now, Explorers — let's talk about the thing everyone always asks about. The arms. Those tiny, famously small, hilariously short little arms. Cosmo, give the Explorers a fact about T. rex's arms.
Cosmo: T. rex's arms were so short it could not reach its own mouth.
Nova: That is true.
Cosmo: It could not. Touch. Its own face.
Nova: Also true.
Cosmo: I feel sad for it.
Nova: Here's where I want you to really THINK, Explorers. Why do you think an enormous, powerful, incredible dinosaur would have such tiny arms? Shout out your guess!
Nova: Okay, here's the answer — and it's so good.
Nova: Think about when you eat an apple. Your mouth does all the biting. Your hands just hold the apple still. T. rex was built exactly like that. Its giant jaws did all the real work — the biting, the crushing, the catching. Its arms only had a small job to do. And bodies are clever — they grow big the parts that do the most work, and small the parts they don't need as much.
Nova: T. rex was built — head to tail, bone by bone — for one thing: that incredible bite. So the arms could stay small. And that's not a weakness. That's the whole design.
Nova: T. rex didn't need big arms. It had the most powerful jaws on land. That was enough. That was everything.
Cosmo: I think the T. rex would be a great at bobbing for apples.
Nova: Cosmo.
Cosmo: What? Its face would just go right in. No arms needed.
Nova: Okay, let's talk about something brilliant before we move on. Explorers — we mentioned chickens. Here's why that connection is real and amazing. On the Dampier Peninsula, near Broome in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, there are rocks right on the coast covered in thousands of dinosaur footprints. Big three-toed tracks made by meat-eating dinosaurs — the same broad family T. rex belongs to. And the Goolarabooloo people of that region have known about those tracks for an incredibly long time.
Cosmo: They've known about dinosaur footprints way before scientists showed up?
Nova: Way, way before. And in their knowledge, those footprints belong to someone called Marala — the Emu Man — a special being from the creation time, which in Goolarabooloo tradition is called Bugarrigarra.
Nova: This story comes to us from the Goolarabooloo people of the Dampier Peninsula, in the Kimberley. It has been told for generations, and it belongs to them.
Nova: In the time of Bugarrigarra — the creation time — a being called Marala, the Emu Man, travelled across the country. He walked and walked, giving law to the land as he went, and he left his footprints pressed into the ground behind him. Those three-toed prints along the coast? They are the footprints of Marala. And the Goolarabooloo people sing a song as they journey through that country — linking the land together, step by step, print by print. Those footprints have been read and cared for and sung over for longer than Western science has been studying dinosaurs at all.
Cosmo: So the footprints are part of a song?
Nova: Part of a song that travels across the land. The country and the story are connected.
Cosmo: That's... really something.
Nova: It really is.

Cosmo: Question Five — estimation time! About how many teeth did T. rex have — about six, about sixty, or about six hundred?
Cosmo: ABOUT SIXTY! Sixty banana-sized teeth! And every time one broke off, a new one grew right back in underneath. T. rex never ran out of teeth. Not once. Nova, I am genuinely jealous.

Nova: Four! The name Tyrannosaurus rex means "tyrant lizard king." It didn't just earn the title — it's literally written into the name forever.
Cosmo: Five! Scientists can figure out how old a T. rex was by looking at its bones — because bones have growth rings inside them, just like a tree trunk! A T. rex could live to about thirty years old. They count the rings. Like a very scientific birthday cake.

Nova: Okay Explorers, this one is for everyone in the car — even the grown-ups. This is the Tiny-Arm Test.
Cosmo: I love a test with "tiny" in the name.
Nova: Here's what you do. Glue your elbows tight to your sides — like they're stuck there with super-glue. Don't move them. Now, using only your forearms, try to touch your own nose.
Cosmo: Just the forearms. Elbows locked. Nose target acquired.
Nova: Tricky, right? That's how short and stubby a T. rex's arms really were. It genuinely could not reach its own face. Now — keep those elbows locked — and do the OTHER T. rex superpower. Close your eyes. Take a big slow sniff through your nose. What can you smell in the car right now?
Nova: Maybe snacks. Maybe someone's shoes. Maybe the car itself. T. rex used a nose JUST like that — sniffing out food from far, far away.
