Nova & Cosmo: Brain Bus, let's GO!

Nova: Welcome to The Brain Bus - I'm Nova, your driver, and right now our co-pilot Cosmo and I are phasing us somewhere enormous. And I mean that literally.

Cosmo: I'm Cosmo, robot co-pilot, galaxy-brain genius, and I have been emotionally preparing for this episode all week.

Nova: Explorers, here is your hook. Ready? The biggest animal that has ever lived on Earth is NOT a dinosaur. It is a blue whale, swimming in the ocean right now, and its tongue alone weighs as much as an entire elephant.

Cosmo: As much as an ELEPHANT. Just the tongue.

Nova: Just the tongue. Today, The Brain Bus is going deep - into the open ocean, where the greatest creatures that have ever existed are doing extraordinary things as we speak. Let's dive.

Nova: So - first thing we need to establish. Cosmo, what do you reckon a whale is? Like, biologically?

Cosmo: Oh, easy. Giant fish. Enormous fish. The king of all fish.

Nova: Beautiful confidence, wrong answer. Whales are mammals - just like us. Lungs, warm blood, and mums who feed their babies milk. Zero gills. Zero.

Cosmo: But - they live in the sea?

Nova: Here's the wild part. Their ancestors walked on four legs on land. Millions of years ago, the great-great-great-however-many-times grandparents of whales looked like a cross between a deer and a dog, and they slowly moved back into the ocean. They still carry the evidence - no back legs anymore, but deep inside a whale's body, you can still find tiny bones where legs used to be.

Cosmo: They went HOME to the ocean. That's not evolution, that's a lifestyle decision.

Nova: And they thrived. Which brings us to size. Explorers, the blue whale is heavier than any dinosaur that ever lived. But here is the question that actually matters - WHY? Why can a whale get so much bigger than anything that has ever walked on land?

Cosmo: Because it eats more?

Nova: Think about a swimming pool. You can lift a friend in water who would be way too heavy to carry on land - because the water holds up their weight. A whale is that friend, except the friend is thirty metres long. The ocean does the holding. On land, a blue whale would be crushed by its own body. In the sea, it can grow as big as physics will allow.

Nova: And now, the snack situation.

Cosmo: Yes. The snack situation. I assumed the biggest animal ever must eat the biggest possible snack. A whale-sized meal. Something enormous. A cheeseburger the size of a bus, perhaps.

Nova: What does a blue whale actually eat, Cosmo?

Cosmo: I have been informed, and I am still processing this emotionally - it eats krill. Tiny shrimp-like things. Pink confetti. Ocean sprinkles.

Nova: The largest animal in the history of life on Earth mostly eats things smaller than your thumb. It gulps an enormous mouthful of water packed with krill, then pushes the water back out through a filter in its mouth made of - and this is true - the exact same stuff as your fingernails.

Cosmo: So it has installed a kitchen colander. In its face.

Nova: Technically accurate. A baby blue whale, by the way, drinks around two hundred litres of milk a day - milk so thick and fatty it's closer to toothpaste than anything you'd put in a glass. And it gains about ninety kilograms every single day.

Cosmo: Ninety kilograms. Per day. That is a full adult human. Every. Day.

Nova: Now - the deep divers. Sperm whales go down almost two kilometres into total darkness, hold their breath for around an hour, and hunt giant squid. They find their prey using clicks - echolocation, firing sound out and listening to what bounces back. And they have the biggest brain of any animal on Earth, about the weight of a large watermelon.

Cosmo: I am adding this to my Data Log. First entry: blue whale, biggest ever, ocean holds it up. Second entry: sperm whale has a watermelon brain and hunts in the dark by clicking. I feel this is important information to retain.

Nova: Smart robot. Now - whale songs. Male humpback whales sing. Long, complex, haunting songs that can last for hours. And here's the part that blew my mind when I first learned it - the songs change slowly, year by year, and new versions spread from group to group across the ocean, like a hit song travelling across continents. Whales have culture.

Nova: Just sit with that for a moment.

Nova: The ocean holds up a whale's enormous body so it can grow bigger than anything that ever lived on land. But it isn't just big. It sings. It has friends it calls by name. Dolphins give each other individual whistle-names they use to find each other across the sea. And bowhead whales can live for over two hundred years - some alive today were born before your great-great-great-grandparents. When you look at the ocean, you're looking at the longest-lived, most complex, most ancient social world on the planet.

Nova: One more thing - killer whales, or orcas. Cosmo, what kind of animal is an orca?

Cosmo: A whale. It is literally in the name. Killer whale.

Nova: It is the biggest dolphin on Earth. Orcas are dolphins. They live in family pods, they have their own local calls passed down like traditions - what scientists actually call cultural dialects - and they are breathtakingly intelligent. And now I want to tell you a story.

Nova: This story comes to us from the Ngāti Porou people of Aotearoa - New Zealand. It has been told for generations. According to their tradition, an ancestor named Paikea was crossing the vast ocean when his canoe was wrecked. As he struggled in the water, a great whale came and carried him safely on its back all the way to Aotearoa. Paikea became a founding ancestor of the Ngāti Porou people, and the bond between those people and whales is still honoured today.

Cosmo: The whale just - helped him. Across the whole ocean.

Nova: And there's a real echo of that bond in Australia too. The Thaua people - a clan of the Yuin nation on the far south coast of New South Wales - have long believed that orcas are the returning spirits of their ancestors. And at a place called Twofold Bay, near Eden, something extraordinary actually happened. Orcas would herd migrating whales into the bay, then slap their tails on the surface to alert the people that a hunt was possible. In return, the people left the orca family the whale's tongue. One orca who took part in this - known as Old Tom - his skeleton is still kept at the Eden Killer Whale Museum today. That's not a myth. That happened.

Cosmo: Orcas. Cooperating with people. Across generations.

Nova: They remember. They plan. They pass knowledge down. The ocean is not empty. It is full of minds.

Nova: Quiz time, Explorers! Cosmo and I are going head to head - you keep score, you be the judge.

Cosmo: I am extremely confident in my ocean knowledge after everything I just learned approximately two minutes ago.

Nova: Three questions. Ready?

Nova: Question one. True or False - a whale is a kind of fish.

Nova: False! Whales are mammals - they breathe air, they're warm-blooded, and their ancestors walked on land.

Cosmo: I got it right because I was corrected publicly earlier and the lesson stuck.

Nova: Question two. Which animal has the biggest brain on Earth - a) elephant, b) sperm whale, or c) human?

Nova: Sperm whale - a brain about the size and weight of a large watermelon, used to hunt in complete darkness.

Cosmo: Correct! I guessed elephant but I'm choosing to remember this differently.

Nova: Question three. True or False - a dolphin sleeps with only half its brain at a time.

Nova: True! One half stays awake so it remembers to swim up and breathe. It never fully switches off.

Cosmo: Half-brain sleep. I do something similar when Nova is explaining spreadsheets.

Nova: However many you got, Explorers, what matters is you were thinking - and thinking hard about the ocean is exactly what this Bus runs on.

Nova: Four facts, fast as a dolphin - every single one brand new.

Cosmo: Hit it.

Nova: A blue whale's heart can slow down to about two beats per minute during a deep dive - saving oxygen so it can stay under longer on a single breath. Your heart right now is probably doing around seventy beats a minute.

Cosmo: Two beats. That is barely a heartbeat. That is a heartbeat thinking about having a heartbeat.

Nova: A narwhal's tusk isn't a horn - it's a single tooth, up to three metres long, growing out through its lip. And it's packed with nerves, so the narwhal can actually feel changes in water pressure and temperature through it. It's a sensory instrument.

Cosmo: The unicorn of the sea is actually an extremely well-equipped scientist.

Nova: Humpback whale songs spread east across the Pacific in waves - researchers watching off eastern Australia noticed new song styles appear, spread group to group, and travel thousands of kilometres within a single season. Hit singles, but underwater.

Cosmo: Whales have charts. There are whale charts.

Nova: And finally - bowhead whales can live for over two hundred years. Scientists have found old hunting harpoon tips - from the 1800s - still embedded in living bowhead whales. Those whales survived, healed, and kept swimming for another century.

Cosmo: They outlasted the people who encountered them. That is a profound sentence.

Nova: Whales and dolphins live where it's often too dark to see anything at all, so they rely almost entirely on listening.

Cosmo: Ears doing heavy lifting.

Nova: Here's the challenge. Close your eyes - everyone in the car, if it's safe. Stay completely silent for twenty seconds, and count every different sound you can hear. The engine, the wind, another car whooshing past, someone breathing, a rattle, a click. Go.

Nova: How many did you find? A whale's hearing is so sensitive it can detect sounds from kilometres away - sounds so low some of them are below what humans can hear at all. Now here is the wondering question for the whole car.

Nova: If you could send just one sound all the way across the ocean to another whale - and that whale would hear it perfectly, no matter the distance - what would you want to say?

Nova: Alright, Explorers, before we phase back - a riddle. Listen carefully.

Nova: I'm no fish, though the cold sea's my home. One straight tooth pokes out where I roam. Old sailors swore I was a unicorn's twin - what sea creature am I, with a tusk, not a fin?

Nova: Hold that answer - because actually, that riddle is pointing somewhere. Not to the answer you're thinking of right now - but to where The Brain Bus is heading next time. Sit with it. Talk it over. We'll find out together on the next stop.
